2 July 2012 will be the 3rd year anniversary of one of the greatest moments in Indian LGBTIQ history, the reading down of section 377 by theDelhiHigh Court thereby decriminalising consensual same sex relationships. These last 3 years have seen the LGBTIQ community bloom in Mumbai especially with the emergence of a rich and diverse queer culture characterised by its parties, pride marches , on ground activism be it against TV channels or the police. While we revel in this open culture , we must remember to not be complacent yet. The verdict of the section 377 battle is yet to be announced by the Supreme court. We yet have 17 SLPs challenging the decriminalisation and queer parties still get raided, as the community gets discriminated time and again.
We hope that the coming days help us march forward as a community and our Government and Judiciary do not slip back into any regressive stands or policies. This 3rd year anniversary hence is not only a time to celebrate but also remind this country that we wait with bated breath in the coming days to see what the LBTIQ community will have to face.
On this occasion Queer Azadi Mumbai urges one and all to be a part of the 2nd July celebration by “Raising your Rainbow”. How do we raise our rainbows?
(That is totally upto you and your creative self and your comfort levels, but we outline some of the activities below.)
- Wear a pride accessory, an earring , a bracelet , a bandana , a cap , a haversack
- Carry a Pride flag on your car , on you , on your work table, or from your balcony
- Meet up at local restaurants , clubs or shops and sport your pride wear or accessory
- Go for your morning jog in Pride Colours , wear a Pride tie to work
- Just pray to mother nature for a rainbow in the sky
- Just be creative and invent more ways to Raise your Rainbow
By doing so i.e. any of this OR some unique creative rainbow rising, you would individually contribute to making this world a more colourful, equal and happy place. We want this activity to be spread across the city ofMumbai and you do not need to be in one place , venue , or at any particular time to Raise your Rainbow. What matters is that we spread message of equality and celebrating differences that needs to reach more and more people
Please remember to report what you are going to do on the QAM FB page / tag us on twitter and we will ensure to let everyone know how you are Raising your Rainbow!!
